Well, here is a new take on fundraising.
A recently-launched startup called Moolta is enabling users to raise money by creating and completing dares, or "challenges." Friends challenge each other to do something difficult or (more likely) embarrassing, and then get people they know to donate money if the dare is completed. Once the task is completed and a video documenting the antic is posted on the platform, the prize money can be claimed.
While successful challenge participants can opt to claim cash prizes, the platform can also be used as a way to earn money for charity. Moolta has partnered with FirstGiving.com to channel its donations to non-profits.
For example, one user named Adam is attempting to raise $1000 for the NYC-based Robin Hood Foundation by climbing the 1,000 stairs of the Empire State Building. As of this writing, he is 60% of the way towards his monetary goal.
While some challenges are unpleasant (eat hot mustard through a straw) or just plain silly (wear all your clothes at once), there is the possibility that some users will cross the line with dangerous or illegal activities. (Users can report "inappropriate" challenges or videos to the site).
But Moolta's founders are hoping more people will use the site for social good.
"We're a platform for combining social good and great content," co-founder and CEO Noam Schwartz told Mashable. "We let friends challenges each other for money or virtual points that can be redeemed for prizes, but the most important incentive is a donation to charity."
